SMEC has operated in Bangladesh since the 1960s and has since established a strong reputation in the design and delivery of complex infrastructure projects. Project Director, Md Ariful Islam said,
“Our engineering team has developed a cost-effective design solution whilst overcoming the unique engineering challenges posed by the rivers and natural conditions affecting the rail alignment. To achieve consensus on the alignment, the SMEC/ACE team has led extensive consultation with a myriad of stakeholders, preparing a design that celebrates the historical significance of the site.”

During the concept and detailed design process, SMEC coordinated input from all key stakeholders including local political leaders, utility providers and community groups. Detailed consultations and workshops were held to clearly communicate the design intent and thinking behind each alignment option. As part of the detailed design the team has altered station locations to optimise the height of the river embankment, which will result in significantly reduce construction costs.
The design of the stations was also a key consideration for the team, reflecting the importance of Mujibnagar in the history of Bangladesh. Connecting these districts is culturally significant because this is where Bangladesh’s first government declared independence and took oath in April 1971. Stations have been designed to reflect local culture whilst incorporating locally available materials. Six stations are proposed including Darshana, Bastobpur, Kanaidanga, Mujibnagar, Monakhali, and Meherpur.
